NanoEmbrace (http://www.nanoembrace.eu/) is an ITN Marie Skłodowska-Curie project under the EU Framework Programme 7. 

To deliver the highest quality of training to young researchers, NanoEmbrace
has identified the key research themes: controlled synthesis, theoretical modelling, characterisation of 1DNS and the integration of 1DNS into device fabrication

  1. Development of growth methods of 1DNS with predefined
    diameters, shape, growth direction and crystal structure (e.g. controlled fabrication of cubic zinc blende or hexagonal wurtzite structure in III-V nanowires). 
  2. Development of theoretical models for the
    growth behaviour, morphology and crystal structure of 1DNS in different material systems. 
  3. Open gateways for the realisation of 1DNS structures with practical applications (functionalisation and
    interfacing). 

    1. Synthesis of 1DNS on silicon surfaces for optoelectronic applications. 
    2. Fabrication of axial and radial heterostructures inside 1DNS such as nanowires for device
      applications in nanophotonics and nanoelectronics.
    3. Development of techniques for fixing NW and attaching electrical contacts to nanowires. 
    4. Fabrication of field effect transistors, resonant
      tunnelling diodes, LEDs and nanolasers based on heterostructured NWs, single photon emitters, emitters of entangled photon pairs, and biosensors. 
    5. Fabrication of advanced NW-based solar
      cells. 
    6. Fabrication of a smart SPM sensor probe with NWs grown directly on cantilever. 
    7. Batch processing of 1DNS i.e. scale up of processing needed for
      practical applications

Within the project, the IMM unit is involved in the growth of silicon nanowires and in the study of the structural and electronic properties of elemental and
compund semiconductor nanowires.
